Fly of the Month 2021

January is the Copper John Nymph



Hook: Mustad 9671, TMC 5262, Dai-Riki 730 (you want a 1x or 2x long shank with 2x heavy wire). #12-#22. A #14 is used here.

Head: Gold or tungsten bead. For a #14, a 3/32” (2.3mm) bead is used. For more weight, a 1/8” bead may be used.
Thread: Black 6/0 or 8/0
Tail: Two brown or black goose or turkey biots
Abdomen: Brassie-sized Ultra-Wire in copper or color of choice
Weight: Some recipes call for wrapping the hook shank with lead wire before wrapping the copper wire over it. In this example, lead was not used.
Wing Case: Thin Skin or turkey tail topped with 1 strand of Krystal Flash or two or three strands of Flashabou. Coat with epoxy.
Thorax: Peacock herl
Legs: Mottled partridge or hen saddle fibers

Thread: Black tying silk
Tail: Golden pheasant tippet fibers
Body: Peacock herl
Central Body: Red tying silk or floss
Throat Hackle: Brown hen hackle
Wings: Matching slips of white duck quill
Head: Varnished black tying silk

April is the Parachute Adams Dry Fly



Hook: Daiichi 1100 or Tiemco 100 size 14-22
Thread: 70 Denier Ultra Thread (in the video I used dark brown, but you could use black or blue dun)
Parachute Post: White Calf Body Hair or Hi-vis Fibers
Tail: Mixture of Grizzly and Brown Hackle Fibers
Abdomen/Body: Nature’s Spirit Fine Natural Dubbing Muskrat Gray
Hackle: Brown and Grizzly Whiting Saddle Hackle




May is the Game Changer Streamer


  • Hook: Any wide gape, heavy wire hook in size 4 to 8. A Kona Big Game Hunter is a great choice. A light wire hook will need keeling with lead wraps or a small scud weight. 
  • Thread: 50D GSP or 70D
  • Tail: Marabou tips, Flashabou
  • Shanks: Fish-Skull Chocklett's Articulated Micro-Spine starter pack. You will use a  6mm tail shank, 4 x 6mm shanks, then an 8mm shank (you can add a second 8mm for even more movement)
  • Body Filler: Cactus Chenille (Large), Palmer Chenille (Medium)
  • Body: Hackle, Hen Saddle - select a saddle that shows a significant variance in feather width from top to bottom, it helps build our taper. 
  • Articulation Wire: Intruder Wire (Large)
  • Eyes: Tab eyes or Jungle Cock eyes
